Out with the old, and in with the new they always say about this time of year. Well that will ring true for me as well.
As many of you know, my design work often takes on a very bold and dynamic approach. I carry that style over to the logos I create and often incorporate a memorable icon. This was true of my first logo, that I had been using since college. It featured a 100% cyan B in Courier with a Direct Selection arrow pointing forward in the middle. This logo fulfilled my style preferences and was easily identifiable.
I found myself wanting more though.
The exploration process for a new logo is always exciting. Scouring Pinterest and my inspiration sites, I sought to find a symbol that I thought embodied my energy, passion, and drive. I kept finding in my sketches that a simple B, or other abstract symbol was not connecting with my thoughts.
I started to explore designs with my signature. I didn’t want to pursue the cliche route of just using my signature alone, but I have always felt it represents those three key aspects. As I began to break down the various pieces of my signature, I finally found what I was looking for.
Then it hit me like a bolt of lightning. (See what I did there?) My new symbol would be a lightning bolt based upon the last 1/4 of my signature. The flourish I put on it has the energy I express, the passion I have to create a great and unique design, and the drive I have to move forward.
The new Bingham Design logo features the bold lightning bolt design in a striking blue and red combination. The blue expresses that passion and energy for design in the boldness reminiscent of my former cyan color from college. The red reflects my other passion and drive for advancing liberty and my work with the Republican party.
I updated the typography from Courier to Choplin and Lato. I still have a thing for slab-serifs that I don’t think I’ll ever be able to shake. With the advancement of web fonts as well, it was important that I incorporate a font choice that would be easily taken to the web and use Google Fonts as the source for my website. While Choplin is not a Google Font, Roboto Slab is a nice web alternative.
