Starting out in Digital Marketing can feel overwhelming, but with a game plan you can find success through concentrated efforts.

As the leader of your Republican county party, campaign, or Republican group, you must have a vision of where you want your digital marketing efforts to lead. Do you want to boost engagement with the community? Do you want to educate citizens about important local issues? Is there a gap to fill in “Get Out the Vote” efforts? There are important steps to take that will help determine what digital services you need to make your efforts a success.

Evaluate Your Situation

If you have just come into your leadership position or are just starting out in the digital world, you need to get a lay of the land in front of you. First, start with getting an understanding of what digital platforms are currently used and acquiring access to those accounts. Coordinate with your team members that are in charge of marketing efforts to get an understanding of what is happening right now.

I’ve put together a 5-question digital marketing audit that will help you get started with evaluating your situation. Easy “Yes” or “No” questions that are meant to guide you through the basics. Once you complete the form, you can have your answers sent to you so you can forward them to your team. We can also start a conversation about how I can help you with the next steps toward online marketing success!

Make a Plan

Do you often hear “You have to engage on Social Media!” or “You need a huge email list to reach people!”? It can seem overwhelming and many people don’t know where to start. That’s where a solid plan comes in. Knowing the who, what, where, when, why, and how of your audience will create success in your online marketing efforts.

  • Who is my target audience?

  • Where are they online?

  • When and Why do they need my information?

These are just a few of the many questions that must be part of the critical exercise of making a plan to start digitally marketing to your base. You cannot try everything at once and hope something sticks; you must have a clear vision for how to proceed and what digital marketing service to use to effectively and efficiently communicate your message.

Start a Committee

You are the leader with the vision, but that doesn’t mean you have to do all of the work. Part of your journey to success should be getting others to buy into your vision and then execute it. This is going to be a balancing act of bringing in the right expertise and making sure that you don’t have “too many cooks in the kitchen”. Empower these members to make the critical decisions that align with your vision and make sure that the communication between them is strong.

Knowing the who, what, where, when, why, and how of your audience will create success in your online marketing efforts.

Propose a Budget

In order to execute any plan for your digital marketing efforts, you are going to need a budget. Whether you are developing a new website, expanding your brand through pay-per-click ads, or keeping your audience informed through email marketing, you will need to have funds to accommodate your growth or to track your efforts.

To get an idea of where to start, consult with a digital marketing expert. They will have an understanding of the services that you will need to help your plan succeed and can propose realistic dollars to return on investment. You might want to develop three budgets – a small, medium, and large – that will give your board options: where is a good place to start and what objectives to do we want to try and meet?

Hit the Ground Running

Going through this entire exercise can be time consuming, but don’t wait until you are finished to bring your services online! Start with the basics and implement more as your knowledge, skills, engagement, and budget allows. Get your team excited about the possibilities!

Don’t be frustrated if you don’t see immediate results. If you’re a new brand or have a unique message, it will take some time and effort in order for it to resonate. Trust in your plan and make sure that your team is on board for the long haul. Success will come!
